Linn's story begins in 1973 in Glasgow, Scotland, when engineer Ivor Tiefenbrun founded the company with a singular goal: build a better turntable than anything currently on the market, after discovering that even small changes in vibration and engineering precision could transform the sound of recorded music. The result was the Linn Sondek LP12, a turntable so meticulously engineered that it remains in production, continually refined, over 50 years later.

That founding discovery shaped Linn's entire engineering philosophy: a "source-first" belief that superior sound begins with the quality of the source, not just the loudspeakers reproducing it — a genuinely contrarian idea at the time that Linn spent decades proving right. The company went on to develop the Isobarik loudspeaker in 1975, the world's first microprocessor-controlled preamplifier and power amplifier in 1985, and, from 2007, became one of the first audio manufacturers in the world to champion digital music streaming over a home network, eventually offering studio-master-quality downloads through Linn Records.
