To find the appropriate bracket that will fit your TV, check your TV's VESA pattern. This is a standardised measurement from the Video Electronic Standards Association that specifies the hole distances on the back of your TV for wall mounting. Most TVs provide this information in their manuals, where they might be referred to as the VESA pattern or wall mount measurements.
In cases where you own an older TV or are unable to locate any specifications in the documents related to your TV, you may need to resort to using a tape measure. Measure the horizontal and vertical distances between the holes and look for a bracket that matches those measurements. Another option is to consider universal, “one-size-fits-all” brackets. These brackets are designed to accommodate most TV brands, simplifying the selection process.
Not all TV wall mounts are universally compatible with all TV types. The key is matching the TV bracket to the hole pattern on the TV's back. However, while not all wall mounts are suitable for every TV, there are numerous universal mounting brackets available.

Informally, TV brackets and wall mounts are often used interchangeably, but they serve distinct functions. Brackets consist of two flat, high-grade thin steel sheets with patterns of holes and cuts. In contrast, the wall mount is the structure that connects the wall bracket to your TV. Both the bracket and the mount are affixed to the wall using screws, wall plugs, washers and bolts. While the wall bracket remains fixed in place, the wall mount offers various adjustment options based on the chosen model.
Most walls are sturdy enough to support a TV but it's essential to exercise caution when dealing with plasterboard walls. For brick walls, you can mount TVs of any size safely, provided that the mount secures into the brick itself, not the mortar, as this offers a more secure attachment. When mounting a large TV, consider using heavy-duty wall anchors designed for brick, as they can easily handle the weight.
In the case of stud walls, which are typically wooden frameworks with plasterboard attached, the wooden studs are robust enough for TV installation. However, if you plan to mount your TV directly on the plasterboard, it's crucial to first install special plasterboard fixings for added stability.
