There are a number of considerations to make when looking to buy a turntable. Firstly, determine whether you want a manual, automatic or semi-automatic turntable. Manual turntables require manual cueing and tonearm placement, while automatic turntables handle these tasks automatically. Turntables can also have either a direct-drive or belt-drive system. Direct-drive turntables offer consistent speed and are often the go-to choice for DJ setups, while belt-drive turntables may provide better sound isolation.

Next you’ll need to check the cartridge and stylus quality. As upgrading these components can significantly impact sound quality, look for turntables that allow for cartridge upgrades. Also make sure that the turntable supports the playback speeds you need.

Finally, consider the price you’re willing to pay. Opting for a cheap record player will likely lead to the use of low quality components, increased susceptibility to damage and the production of subpar audio quality. To truly unlock the finest sound within your hi-fi system, choose a high end turntable.

The terms 'turntable' and 'record player' are often used interchangeably but there are distinct differences between them. A turntable is a fundamental component of a record player. It comprises a rotating disc that supports the record, a tonearm responsible for guiding the needle over the grooves and a phonograph cartridge that translates stylus movements into audible sound. To use a turntable effectively, it needs to be connected to separate components like speakers, amplifiers and preamps, allowing you to create a customised audio experience with optimal sound quality.

Arecord player, on the other hand, is an all-in-one device that integrates a turntable, speakers and an amplifier into a single unit. Record players are designed for simplicity and convenience, offering a plug-and-play experience that appeals to casual listeners or those with limited space. While they provide ease of use, they typically offer fewer customisation options and deliver lower sound quality when compared to a well-configured high-fidelity turntable setup.

A preamp is typically required for a turntable audio system but whether you need to buy one separately depends on your equipment. A preamp boosts the low-volume phono signal produced by a turntable to a standard line level signal that can be connected to an amplifier or receiver. Many entry-level turntables have built-in preamps, as do some AV receivers and powered speakers. If your equipment has a built-in preamp and line output, you may not need to purchase a separate one. However, often standalone preamps are a good choice if you’re looking for higher sound quality and reduced noise, especially when using high-end turntables, amplifiers and speakers.
