EA13
A Classic Reimagined
The FiiO EA13 brings the timeless character of valve amplification into a strikingly modern design. Developed over three years, this pure tube integrated amplifier combines carefully selected imported valves, Class A push-pull amplification and a custom high-bandwidth output transformer to create a listening experience that is rich, expressive and unmistakably analogue.
Its distinctive appearance brings together the warm glow of the valves, illuminated controls and dual mechanical VU meters, creating an engaging visual experience that changes with the music. From the carefully machined aluminium front panel to the recessed valve arrangement and solid unibody chassis, every element has been designed to combine contemporary refinement with the character of classic tube amplification.
Six Imported Tubes for Naturally Rich Sound
The EA13 uses six imported valves across its preamplification and power amplification stages. Two SYLVANIA NOS PCF80 tubes are responsible for voltage amplification, providing a refined and transparent presentation with an open, natural soundstage. Their characteristic tonal qualities complement the inherent warmth of the valve architecture while retaining impressive clarity and musical detail.
Four JJ ELECTRONIC EL34 power tubes handle the power amplification stage. Manufactured in the Czech Republic, the EL34 is a classic European power tube renowned for its warm, full-bodied character and distinctive musical presentation. Together, the six valves give the EA13 a rich and engaging sonic signature that brings vocals, instruments and acoustic textures to life.
As with all vacuum tubes, the appearance of the printed markings can vary naturally due to production batches, storage conditions and oxidation. Slight fading, discolouration, blurring or partial peeling of the markings is normal and does not affect the performance or sound quality of the tubes.
Class A Push-Pull Amplification
Drawing inspiration from renowned tube amplifier circuits of the 1950s, the EA13 combines a classic push-pull topology with pure Class A operation and pentode mode. This carefully considered approach is designed to minimise distortion while preserving the characteristic smoothness, density and transparency associated with high-quality valve amplification.
The amplifier produces up to 28W + 28W of output power at 8Ω, giving it sufficient authority to drive a wide range of bookshelf loudspeakers and selected floorstanding models. Despite its considerable power, the EA13 retains the delicate and expressive qualities expected from a Class A valve amplifier, allowing subtle details such as the breath of a vocalist to emerge naturally while larger recordings develop a spacious and convincing sense of scale.
Custom High-Bandwidth Low-Noise Output Transformer
The output transformer is one of the most important elements in any valve amplifier, and FiiO has paid particular attention to its design for the EA13. A custom EI silicon steel laminate transformer has been developed specifically for the amplifier, providing the bandwidth and stability required to make the most of the EL34 output stage.
The transformer is internally filled with epoxy resin and fine sand before being completely sealed within a robust enclosure. This construction helps suppress mechanical vibration while providing effective electromagnetic shielding and protection against moisture. The resulting stability contributes to a cleaner background, tighter and more substantial bass and refined high frequencies.
By maintaining control across the frequency range, the transformer allows the EA13 to reproduce both delicate musical nuances and powerful dynamic passages with confidence.
Modern Design with Classic Character
The EA13 takes the familiar visual language of a traditional valve amplifier and gives it a contemporary interpretation. Its aviation-grade aluminium front panel is CNC machined, thickened and sandblasted to create a refined tactile finish while helping to suppress unwanted resonance.
A solid unibody chassis provides a clean and commanding appearance while contributing to mechanical rigidity and electromagnetic shielding. The valves sit within a recessed mounting arrangement, complemented by an integrated protective cover that provides a modern appearance while helping protect the tubes during everyday use.
Side ventilation grilles allow heat to escape efficiently, while vibration-damping feet provide a stable foundation. Every aspect of the enclosure has been considered to balance aesthetics, durability and performance.
Precision Analogue Volume Control
Volume adjustment is handled by a stepped high-precision analogue potentiometer offering 40 levels of adjustment. Precision resistors are matched at each step to maintain consistent left and right channel balance throughout the volume range.
This approach provides accurate and dependable control while addressing some of the channel imbalance and long-term wear characteristics associated with conventional carbon film potentiometers. Each adjustment offers clear, repeatable changes in level, allowing listening volume to be set with confidence.
Mechanical VU Meters
The EA13 brings a distinctly visual element to the listening experience through its dual-channel stereo mechanical VU meters. Each meter features a warm LED backlight and genuine mechanical movement, with the needles responding dynamically as music plays.
Driven by a dedicated control IC, the meters combine classic analogue styling with modern electronic control. As the music develops, the illuminated needles move with the performance, making the amplifier an engaging focal point within the listening environment.
The VU meter pointers may show a deviation of up to ±1mm from the zero position, which falls within the specified factory tolerance. Minor differences in the position of the left and right pointers when returning to zero are a normal characteristic of mechanical meters and do not affect operation.
Audiophile-Grade Components
The EA13 uses carefully selected components throughout its signal and power supply circuits. High-quality axial metal film coupling capacitors provide low loss, low distortion and excellent stability, helping preserve the character of the audio signal as it passes through the amplifier.
Japanese NCC large-capacity filter electrolytic capacitors are also employed within the power supply, providing clean and stable power for the valve circuitry. These carefully selected components contribute to the EA13's smooth, naturally rich presentation while supporting reliable operation.
Flexible Hi-Fi Connectivity
Four RCA analogue inputs allow the EA13 to serve as the amplification hub of a complete Hi-Fi system. The inputs can accommodate a variety of sources including digital streamers, turntables, CD players, DACs and other analogue components.
Speaker connection is provided through gold-plated binding posts supporting both 4Ω and 8Ω loudspeakers. This allows the EA13 to partner with a wide range of speaker designs while providing secure and reliable connections.
A 6.35mm single-ended headphone output provides a convenient option for private listening. When headphones are connected, the speaker connections should first be disconnected, and matching dummy loads are recommended at the speaker terminals to avoid extended operation under light-load or no-load conditions.
A dedicated 12V Trigger In connection also allows the EA13 to synchronise its power switching with other compatible components, making it easier to integrate into a wider Hi-Fi system.
Simple and Intuitive Operation
The EA13 has been designed to make everyday operation straightforward. A four-position input selector provides access to the amplifier's analogue inputs, with a high-quality encoder offering positive tactile feedback and reliable long-term operation.
The left control knob also provides access to additional lighting functions. A single press can change the knob indicator colour or switch the indicator lighting off, while a double press can turn off both the knob illumination and VU meter backlighting.
These controls allow the EA13's visual presentation to be adapted to suit different listening environments, from a fully illuminated display to a more understated appearance.
Intelligent Standby Function
A built-in precision signal detection circuit continuously monitors the incoming audio signal. If no signal is detected for 30 minutes, the EA13 automatically enters a low-power standby mode.
This intelligent function helps reduce unnecessary energy consumption while also helping to preserve the lifespan of the vacuum tubes. It provides added convenience for everyday listening, particularly when the amplifier is integrated into a system that may be left powered on between listening sessions.
Customisable RGB Lighting
The EA13 combines the natural amber glow of its vacuum tubes with adjustable RGB lighting around the dual control knobs. The vibrant illumination can be customised to complement the surrounding environment or create a particular visual atmosphere.
The result is a distinctive combination of traditional valve aesthetics and modern lighting technology. The amplifier can therefore become an integral part of the room's visual character as well as its audio system.
A Complete Valve Amplifier Experience
The FiiO EA13 combines the classic appeal of valve amplification with contemporary engineering and practical system integration. Its six imported tubes, Class A push-pull topology and custom high-bandwidth output transformer are designed to deliver the rich, smooth and expressive character associated with traditional tube amplifiers, while its modern construction and carefully selected components ensure a refined and dependable performance.
With four analogue inputs, 4Ω and 8Ω speaker outputs, a dedicated headphone connection and 12V Trigger support, the EA13 can sit naturally at the centre of a versatile Hi-Fi system. Whether paired with a digital streamer and compact loudspeakers in the living room or used with a turntable and dedicated speakers in a study, it provides a compelling combination of musical performance, tactile control and visual character.
