Burson Audio began in 1996 in Melbourne, Australia, not as a company but as a shared hobby — a small group of audiophiles pooling their engineering expertise simply because they loved music and wanted better ways to hear it. That grassroots, no-corporate-agenda spirit persisted for almost a decade before Burson released its first commercial products in 2005, and it still defines the company today.

Burson has built its reputation on Class-A headphone amplifiers, DACs, preamps, power amps, and — distinctively — its own custom-designed discrete op-amps, an area few other audio brands bother to engineer themselves. Products like the Soloist and Conductor series, along with innovations like the fully IC-free Timekeeper amplifier and proprietary Max Current Power Supply technology, reflect a design philosophy built around minimalist circuits, high current, and transparency, rather than chasing feature lists.

Still independent and still Melbourne-based, Burson occupies a genuinely boutique position in the headphone and desktop-audio world — respected by head-fi enthusiasts precisely because it answers only to its own engineering standards, not a parent company's roadmap.
