Elac's story begins on September 1, 1926, in Kiel, Germany, where the company was founded as Electroacustic GmbH to research sonar technology and the behaviour of sound in air and water. That early expertise in precision acoustics gave Elac a genuine head start when it moved into consumer audio after the war, launching its first product, the PW1 record player, in 1948 and quickly becoming one of Europe's leading turntable manufacturers. By 1957, Elac held the patent for the first stereo moving-magnet phono cartridge — a foundational piece of technology still echoed in cartridge design today.

Elac moved into loudspeaker design in 1984, and its engineering culture produced two genuinely distinctive proprietary drivers: the 4Pi omnidirectional tweeter in 1985, and the JET folded-ribbon tweeter in 1993, both still found across the brand's upper-tier ranges. The company's international profile grew substantially from 2015 onward through its collaboration with celebrated speaker designer Andrew Jones, whose Debut and Uni-Fi series became critical and commercial successes, prized for delivering genuinely high-end sound at remarkably accessible prices.
