Goldring

Goldring's story began in 1906, when two Czech-born brothers, Heinrich and Julius Scharf, started manufacturing gramophone parts in Berlin under the name Gebrüder Scharf. What began with needles, clockwork motors, and governor springs soon grew into more sophisticated "sound boxes" — the acoustic ancestors of the modern magnetic pickup — and by 1926 those products carried a Gold Ring stamp on the casing, denoting a mark of quality that would eventually become the company's name.

Goldring relocated to Britain in 1933, and the decades that followed produced some of the most significant developments in the company's history: the British-made Goldring 500 magnetic cartridge in 1954, which became a genuine industry benchmark and was used extensively by the BBC, followed by the 600 and 700 series through the 1950s and 60s. The company moved to a larger facility in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, in 1974, where nearly 300 people worked on the acclaimed 900 series, and continued innovating into moving coil cartridge design through the 1980s and 90s.

Now well over a century old, Goldring remains a name closely associated with the very best of British hi-fi, still designing and hand-building cartridges in the UK using expertise passed down across three generations. The company's E-series cartridges have introduced a new generation of vinyl enthusiasts to the Goldring name, proving that a century-old brand can still speak directly to today's listeners.
