LG's story begins in 1958 in South Korea, when Koo In-hwoi founded GoldStar in the aftermath of the Korean War, with a clear mission: to help rebuild the nation by supplying home-grown radios and electronics to a country that had relied almost entirely on imported technology. GoldStar produced South Korea's first domestically built radios and televisions, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world's leading electronics companies.

Over the following decades, the company achieved a remarkable string of firsts: Korea's first refrigerator in 1965, its first air conditioner in 1968, and the world's first colour TV in 1979. In 1995, following a merger with Lucky Chemical, the company adopted its current name, LG — drawn from "Lucky Goldstar" — and continued pushing display technology forward, including the world's first 60-inch plasma TV in 2001 and pioneering work in OLED display technology.
