Monitor Audio was founded in 1972 near Cambridge, England, by Mo Iqbal, who worked alongside a tight-knit team of engineers hand-assembling loudspeakers with what the company still describes as "near-maddening perfectionism." From the very first product, the legendary MA1, Monitor Audio set out to do things differently — designing and engineering as much as possible in-house rather than relying on off-the-shelf parts, an approach the company has maintained for over 50 years.

That commitment to proprietary engineering produced a steady run of genuine innovations: metal-dome tweeters in the 1980s, and, in 1991, the patented C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) driver material, adapted from aerospace engineering, which remains central to Monitor Audio's sound today. The company brought manufacturing in-house in 1976, moved to its current Essex headquarters in 2000, and has continued expanding its portfolio through acquisitions including British hi-fi brand Roksan in 2016 and furniture specialist Blok in 2019.

Now sold in more than 70 countries and celebrating over 50 years as an independent British company, Monitor Audio designs its drivers, tweeters, crossovers, and cabinets almost entirely in-house from its Essex headquarters — proof that Mo Iqbal's original hands-on perfectionism scaled into one of Britain's most consistently innovative speaker brands.
