Nagaoka

Nagaoka's story begins in 1940 in Tokyo, where the company was founded as a precision watch parts manufacturer, specialising in the exacting machining of extremely hard materials, including diamonds. That early expertise in micro-fabrication proved to be a perfect foundation for an entirely different pursuit: in 1947, Nagaoka began manufacturing phonograph needles, and by 1961 had moved into producing diamond styluses for phono cartridges — a natural evolution of skills first honed on tiny watch components.

That commitment to in-house precision has defined Nagaoka ever since. The company is genuinely unique in the cartridge industry as the only manufacturer producing every required component itself, including the diamond tips, giving it complete control over quality at every stage. While worldwide interest in vinyl declined through the 1990s with the rise of the CD, Nagaoka stayed steadfastly committed to analogue audio, preserving decades of specialised stylus-making expertise that positioned the company perfectly for vinyl's later resurgence.

Now based in Higashine City, Yamagata Prefecture, Nagaoka produces more than 90% of the world's phono cartridge styli, alongside its acclaimed Moving Permalloy (MP) cartridge series, prized for their warm, full-bodied tonal character. More than 85 years after machining its first watch component, Nagaoka remains one of the most trusted names in analogue playback — proof that precision, once mastered, translates beautifully across generations of technology.
