Ortofon's story begins on October 9, 1918, in Copenhagen, when Danish engineers Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen founded the Electrical Phono Film Company, backed by a small group of forward-thinking investors. Their original ambition was remarkably bold for the time: develop one of the world's first synchronized sound film systems. That early work paid off spectacularly — the pair presented the first fully synchronised sound films at Copenhagen's Palace Theatre, creating a genuine sensation, and their "System Petersen og Poulsen" went on to form the basis of optical sound film technology still referenced today.
As sound film technology matured through the 1940s, the company turned its precision engineering toward an emerging opportunity: gramophone record playback. That shift led directly to Ortofon's first moving-coil cartridge in 1948, a genuine breakthrough that established the company as a serious force in analogue audio, followed in 1959 by the professional-grade SPU pickup — still produced in updated form today. The company formally adopted the Ortofon name in 1947, drawn from the Greek for "correct sound," a philosophy that has guided every cartridge the company has built since.
Now manufacturing in Nakskov, Denmark, and producing roughly 500,000 cartridges a year, Ortofon has become the world's largest manufacturer of magnetic phono cartridges, with more than 300 distinct models developed since that first 1948 breakthrough. More than a century after two engineers set out to synchronise sound with film, Ortofon remains the benchmark name in vinyl playback — proof that a pursuit of "correct sound" translates beautifully across an entire century of audio technology.
