REL
REL Acoustics was founded around 1990 in Bridgend, Wales, by Richard Edmund Lord — the source of the company's name — who set out to solve a problem he felt the market had never properly addressed: building subwoofers with genuine precision and musicality, not just raw low-frequency output. Dissatisfied with the subwoofers available at the time, Lord built his own custom design, integrated directly into a bay window, and word quickly spread among audiophiles that a Welshman had built the finest-sounding sub-bass system they'd ever heard.
That grassroots beginning launched a company built entirely around a single, focused mission: reproduce the low end with the same precision and musical detail as the rest of a serious system. Lord's key innovation, the High-Level Input — connecting a subwoofer directly to a main amplifier's speaker outputs for genuinely seamless integration — became a defining REL technology, carried through acclaimed ranges including the Britannia, T/x, and the reimagined Serie S.
Acquired in 2005 by John Hunter and Donald Brody, with REL Acoustics America established in Berkeley, California that same year, REL has grown into one of the fastest-growing high-end audio brands in the world, still guided by the simple mission captured in its own philosophy: Do One Thing. Do It Perfectly.
