Roon's roots trace back to the mid-2000s in New York, where a group of music-loving software engineers — several with backgrounds building Bloomberg's electronic trading platform — set out to solve a problem every serious collector recognised: how do you make a large digital music library feel as engaging and tactile as flipping through a stack of vinyl, complete with liner notes, cover art, and the stories behind every recording? Their answer was Sooloos, a pioneering music server platform that demonstrated just how powerful computers could be for genuinely exploring, not just storing, a music collection.

Meridian Audio acquired Sooloos in 2008, and two of its original architects, Enno Vandermeer and Danny Dulai, continued refining that vision within Meridian for several more years. In 2015, the pair spun their software work out into an independent company, Roon Labs, based in Bedford, New York, with a clear mission: bring that same rich, deeply connected music experience to any Mac or Windows PC, working seamlessly with equipment from hi-fi brands across the industry.

Now operating as an independent unit within Harman International, Roon continues to build software that lets music lovers explore not just their collections, but the people, performances, and connections behind every recording — a genuine spiritual successor to the ambitious idea first sketched out by a group of music-obsessed engineers two decades ago.
