Sennheiser's story begins on June 1, 1945, when university lecturer Fritz Sennheiser founded Laboratorium Wennebostel — "Labor W" for short — in a farmhouse near Hannover, Germany, initially building voltmeters and other measuring equipment. In the summer of that same year, the fledgling company received an order to build microphones, and that project would go on to define the entire company's future.

Labor W's first microphone, the DM1, arrived the following year, followed in 1947 by the MD 2, which quickly became a favourite among radio stations. From there, Fritz Sennheiser's small start-up diversified rapidly and consistently — geophysical measurement equipment, noise-compensating microphones, and mixing amplifiers through the late 1940s and 1950s — before the company formally adopted the Sennheiser name in 1958. Decades of landmark products followed, from acclaimed studio microphones to the enduringly popular HD 25 headphone, still in demand among DJs and sound engineers a quarter-century after its introduction.

Now led by Fritz's grandsons as co-CEOs, and still headquartered in Wedemark-Wennebostel near Hannover, Sennheiser continues to build headphones, microphones, and professional wireless technology guided by the same spirit of discovery that started it all in a post-war farmhouse nearly eight decades ago.
