Sumiko was founded in 1972 in Japan by a small team that included American theoretical physicist David Fletcher, who had previously worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California before turning his attention to high-fidelity audio. The company's name, fittingly, was drawn from one of the founders' wives — a personal touch behind a brand that would go on to become one of the most respected names in phono cartridges.
Sumiko's earliest work centred on importing and distributing high-end Japanese audio equipment to North America, introducing turntable pioneers like Grace tonearms and Supex cartridges to American audiophiles years before the moving-coil cartridge revival reached the West. That import expertise soon evolved into Sumiko's own cartridge design, beginning with the Talisman series of MC cartridges in 1982, followed by the genuinely first-of-its-kind mass-produced Alchemist MC cartridge in 1984, and the enduringly popular Oyster, Blue Point, and Black Pearl ranges launched in 1992.
Now part of the Fine Sounds Group alongside Sonus faber, and distributed through Pro-Ject and Henley worldwide, Sumiko continues to build handcrafted moving magnet and moving coil cartridges spanning every price point — more than 40 years after David Fletcher first brought his passion for analogue sound from a physics lab to the turntable.
