Western Acoustics

Western Acoustics was founded by engineer and designer Liam Porr, who set out to build loudspeakers around a genuinely practical starting point: real living rooms, not dedicated listening rooms. As Porr has described it, his own experience as a young listener in a regular apartment shaped the entire brand — a desire to build hi-fi that fits naturally into modern, realistic living environments rather than demanding a room built around it.

The company began in the Dogpatch neighbourhood of San Francisco before relocating to Brooklyn, New York, where it's based today. From the outset, Western Acoustics adopted a deliberately narrow, focused philosophy: work on only a handful of products, and make each one genuinely exceptional, rather than spreading development across a sprawling catalogue. That focus shows in flagship products like the Type 2.1 bookshelf speaker, which pairs a Danish Purifi woofer with an Italian FaitalPRO compression driver loaded into a custom spherical-wave horn, all powered by an active DSP amplifier from Dutch specialist Hypex — engineering more commonly found in the esoteric high-end audio world, built into an accessible, active bookshelf design.

Handcrafted with Baltic birch cabinetry and solid maple horn geometry, and finished with genuine cabinet-making detail, Western Acoustics has quickly built a following among a new generation of hi-fi listeners, including a notable debut of the Type 2.1 at AXPONA 2026. It's a young company with an old-world level of craftsmanship, built around a simple idea: exceptional sound and beautiful design belong in the room you actually live in.
