Seven
Model Seven is the largest speaker in the Model Collection, delivering our signature sound with even more scale and depth than Model Five. It is a sealed, acoustic suspension design, based on the same principle Henry Kloss helped bring to market in the 1950s. It is built around a 13-inch woofer, dedicated 5-inch midrange and a 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter, all in their own enclosures.
At three feet tall and weighing 30.8kg, Model Seven is not shy about its stature. In fact, it rewards you in more ways than one. KLH could tell you it’s the last speaker you’ll ever need, but we’d rather you found out for yourself.
Easy To Live With
Larger speakers can demand a lot of your space. Many want to be pulled halfway into the room and still won’t sound right without the right treatment. Model Seven only asks for 6 to 24-inches of space from the wall and to avoid corners when possible. Because the cabinet is sealed, there’s no port noise to cause boomy bass, something that plagues most modern speakers.
Having an 18-inch-wide front baffle helps too. It keeps more of the sound aimed forward at you, and less of it bouncing around the room, causing reflections that smear imaging. It’s how our speakers make it easy to find that “phantom centre” so many seek.
KLH also include a three-position Acoustic Balance Control on the back of each speaker, which trims everything above 400Hz to suit your room, and leaves the bass alone. If your room is bright—think glass and tiles—or dull—think carpets and bookcases—you can adjust the Model Sevens so they sound just right.
Thoughtfully Designed
Model Seven looks the way a KLH speaker has always looked: real wood veneers, a wide front face, shallow proportions. KLH didn’t add chrome or flashing lights. They spent the budget on the parts that make it sound the way it does and a cabinet that facilitates room-filling performance.
Real Wood Veneer - English Walnut or West African Mahogany under a low-gloss clear lacquer. Natural grain means no two pairs are quite alike. Keep the potted plants on something else.
Wide Baffle - KLH speakers are wide and shallow whereas most new speakers are narrow and deep. It's our signature look, and it helps keep more of the music in front of you, where it belongs.
Reinforced Cabinet - A structurally reinforced enclosure with 3/4-inch MDF walls and a full 1-inch front baffle. This stout cabinet’s goal is to reduce vibration, and that's where most of the 68 pounds comes from.
Die-Cast Aluminium Frames - Take the grilles off and you'll see them: die-cast aluminium frames around the woofer and midrange, and a machined aluminium faceplate around the tweeter. They hold each driver precisely in place and resist resonance.
Magnetic Grilles - Low-profile linen grilles cleanly attach with powerful magnets. Leave them on for the classic silhouette, or take them off and show off the driver array.
Slanted Riser Base - An included 3-degree riser base in powder-coated 14-gauge steel tilts Model Seven back toward your ears and completes the look.
What You'll Hear
The bigger the woofer, the more air you push, the more sound you get. KLH put Model Seven’s 13-inch woofer and half-roll rubber surround in an acoustically sealed cabinet, where the air within acts as a natural spring behind the cone. This helps Model Seven reach 26Hz (-10dB) while staying tight and well-defined at higher volumes instead of becoming loose and muddy.
KLH like to think it doesn’t shake the room as much as it hits you in the chest.
Model Seven is a three-way design, the woofer handles everything below 300Hz, while a dedicated 5-inch midrange—housed in its own enclosure—handles 300Hz - 3,500Hz: voices, guitars, pianos, the part of the music your ears are quickest to notice when something sounds “off”. The 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter takes it from there.
It sounds great right out of the box, but even better when you give it about eight hours of playing at moderate volume. Patience—as usual—pays.
13" Pulp-Paper Woofer - Pulp-paper cone with flat-wire voice coil and half-roll rubber surround, in a die-cast aluminium frame. Sealed enclosure, reaching 26Hz (-10dB).
5" Pulp-Paper Midrange - A dedicated driver in its own internal enclosure, for the frequencies that matter most. Pulp-paper cone, half-roll rubber surround, die-cast aluminium frame.
1" Aluminium Dome Tweeter - Smooth, extended treble with soft rubber suspension, set in a machined aluminium faceplate.
Three-Position Acoustic Balance Control - A three-position switch on the back of Model Seven, “Hi, Mid, and Lo” trims everything above 400Hz by 1.5dB–up to 3 dB–and leaves bass alone. Bright, hard-surfaced rooms tend to want more trim; while soft, carpeted ones want less.
Thirteen-Component Crossover - Iron-core inductors and Mylar capacitors, handing off at 300Hz and 3,500Hz. The crossover decides which driver plays which note. Not the place to economise.
