Impression ESL 11A
MartinLogan’s Impression ESL 11A reveals the pure emotional impact of a performance, with nothing between the audio and the listener’s ears. Featuring an 11-inch (CLS™) XStat™ electrostatic transducer, dual 8-inch PoweredForce Forward™ woofers powered by dual 275-watt Class-D amplifiers, and controlled by a 24-Bit Vojtko™ DSP Engine and ARC™ (Anthem Room Correction), the Impression ESL 11A delivers exceptional transparency and realism.
The goal of the loudspeaker is to disappear into its audio performance. By removing the loudspeaker’s influence, the pure emotional impact of the performance is revealed, with nothing standing between the audio and the listener.
The Impressionist masters removed the barrier between art and emotion, emphasizing immediacy and movement to enhance the feelings inspired by their work. The Impression ESL 11A achieves a similar effect through an unprecedented level of audio transparency and realism.
The Immediacy of Exceptional Audio
The Impression ESL 11A is part of MartinLogan’s Masterpiece Series. It features a dual 8-inch woofer system with ARC-honed performance for perfectly blended low-frequency response. The integration of this woofer array with MartinLogan’s signature 11-inch-wide XStat CLS transducer, combined with a powerful dual-amplifier section, delivers an expressive and dynamic listening experience.
The familiar elements of the classic MartinLogan electrostatic loudspeaker are all present: Advanced MicroPerf stator technology, which allows nearly twice the exposed electrostatic diaphragm surface area as a traditional panel of the same size; a reinforced electrostatic panel with rigid ClearSparâ„¢ spacers that maintain precise diaphragm tension while preserving the transparent design; and the elegant AirFrameâ„¢ Blade construction that creates a seamless connection between the electrostatic panel and woofer cabinet.
The Impression ESL 11A also incorporates significant refinements. Inspired by MartinLogan’s breakthrough engineering, the woofer section has been reimagined with dual 275-watt Class-D amplifiers, a 24-Bit Vojtko™ DSP Engine, and ARC™ (Anthem Room Correction).
Using two 8-inch laser-engineered, low-distortion aluminum cone woofers housed in independently enclosed chambers, PoweredForce Forwardâ„¢ bass alignment technology controls the interaction between the rear-firing woofer and the wall behind it. Through intelligent phase-shifting design, wall reflections are minimized, resulting in more uniform frequency response and realistic, tactile bass performance. This innovation enhances listening experiences in virtually any room.
Achieving the Laboratory Standard in Your Own Room
In MartinLogan’s laboratories, engineers strive for complete transparency. Outside the lab, however, the listening room itself introduces variables that can significantly affect speaker performance. The size, shape, and furnishings of a room can alter bass behavior in unpredictable ways.
For the first time in an electrostatic loudspeaker, MartinLogan integrates exclusive Anthem Room Correction (ARC) technology. By using ARC to optimize the low-frequency response relative to the ESL panel output, listeners can achieve performance comparable to MartinLogan’s own audio testing facilities.
ARC measures low-frequency sound output within the room and compares it to ideal response curves that compensate for room anomalies. Advanced algorithms then correct these deviations, delivering naturally blended, accurate bass performance tailored to the listening environment.
Combined with PoweredForce Forward bass technology and the advanced room-correction capabilities of ARC, the Impression ESL 11A produces precise imaging, exceptional focus, natural sound reproduction at realistic listening levels, and agile full-range performance in open spaces.
This level of performance distinguishes a true masterpiece from the merely excellent.
New Ultra-Rigid AirFrame Blade Design
The Impression ESL 11A XStat panels are joined to their cabinets using MartinLogan’s redesigned AirFrame Blade construction, precision-manufactured from aerospace-grade extruded aluminum alloy. This material and manufacturing process create an exceptionally rigid structure.
The bold styling of the AirFrame Blade rail system serves as a modern design statement while never obstructing the panel’s playable surface area or dipole radiation pattern. It also provides electrical and acoustical isolation, minimizing distortion caused by vibration and resonance. The flowing lines highlight the integration of the electrostatic panel with the compact woofer and amplifier section, enhancing imaging, detail retrieval, accuracy, and efficiency.
Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) Electrostatic Panel
CLS technology is a fundamental element of every MartinLogan electrostatic loudspeaker. Through a proprietary manufacturing process, the panel incorporates a gentle horizontal curvature that enhances high-frequency detail produced by the large radiating surface while maintaining overall sonic accuracy. The graceful curve transitions seamlessly into the flat grille of the woofer section.
Controlled Dispersion Sound Radiation
The sound heard from a loudspeaker is a combination of direct sound and room reflections from walls, floors, and ceilings. Depending on timing and angle, these reflections can either enhance spatial realism or blur detail and stereo imaging.
Electrostatic panels function as true dipole speakers, producing a near-ideal controlled-dispersion radiation pattern. They direct very little sound toward the side walls, minimizing reflections that interfere with direct sound. At the same time, strong rear radiation enriches ambience and spaciousness with naturally delayed midrange and high-frequency information.
New PoweredForce Forwardâ„¢ Bass Technology
PoweredForce Forward bass technology combines two MartinLogan innovations: PoweredForce, which enables compact enclosures to produce substantial bass output, and ForceForward, which reduces performance-degrading front-wall bass reflections.
Through advanced crossover topology and phase-timed woofers, PoweredForce Forward minimizes destructive reflected energy. Working seamlessly with the electrostatic panel, it offers greater placement flexibility while enhancing overall realism and bass accuracy.
Turning Unused Space Into Better Bass
The cabinet depth of the Masterpiece Series was carefully engineered to maximize the benefits of PoweredForce and ForceForward technologies. Combined with ARCâ„¢, these technologies provide a level of low-frequency precision that is uniquely advanced.
Cabinet dimensions create an ideal relationship between woofer size, enclosure volume, and amplifier power. With individually sealed chambers and powerful amplification, the powered woofer systems reach deep bass frequencies with authority while preserving fine detail.
ForceForward technology addresses a common loudspeaker challenge: bass reflections from the wall behind the speaker. By selectively adjusting the phase relationship between opposing woofers, powered Masterpiece Series speakers effectively eliminate problematic bass energy from behind the cabinet, resulting in more accurate low-frequency performance.
This innovation also simplifies speaker placement by creating a more uniform bass launch pattern. Masterpiece Series speakers can be positioned closer to walls than previous MartinLogan generations while maintaining exceptional performance. For optimal results, MartinLogan recommends positioning the rear of the speaker cabinet at least the diameter of the woofer away from the rear wall.
Due to their dipole design, electrostatic panels perform best when placed at least 2.5 feet from the wall behind them, helping create the richly detailed, three-dimensional soundstage for which MartinLogan speakers are renowned.
