ND-1
Infinite Musical Enjoyment
The N Series inherits Matrix Audio's signature design aesthetic and is dedicated to premium desktop audio systems. Created for discerning audiophiles, this range of Hi-Fi separates comprises three core models: the NT-1 Digital Audio Transport, the ND-1 Audio DAC and the NA-1 Headphone Amplifier. With versatile combination options, the N Series caters to those with uncompromising standards, bringing greater refinement, presence and a true sense of occasion to the desktop Hi-Fi experience.
The Texture of Fidelity
The ND-1 is a new audio DAC meticulously crafted by Matrix Audio for separates Hi-Fi systems. Embracing a philosophy of simplicity, it focuses entirely on the critical aspects of digital-to-analogue conversion. With sound quality as its foremost priority, the ND-1 combines a rigorously engineered circuit architecture with professional tuning to deliver a clean, transparent and low-distortion presentation. Its classic, warm tonal character faithfully reveals every detail and emotion in the music, making it ideal for audiophiles seeking authentic, delicate and lifelike reproduction of the original recording.
More Than You Imagine
The ND-1 is equipped with a comprehensive range of digital inputs, including optical, coaxial, AES/EBU, IIS-LVDS, USB Type-B and USB Type-C. Alongside compatibility with standard S/PDIF digital signals, it supports simultaneous connections to smartphones, tablets and PCs through its different USB interfaces. All digital inputs feature electrical isolation to effectively block common-mode interference and ground-loop noise between the source device and the DAC circuitry, ensuring pure and stable audio data transmission.
Dual-Engine Core
The ND-1 features AKM's flagship chipset combination, pairing the premium AK4191EQ delta-sigma modulator with two AK4499EX DAC chips. While the AK4191EQ handles high-precision digital processing and reclocking, the two AK4499EX chips use an independent channel architecture, with each dedicated to digital-to-analogue conversion for the left or right channel. This '1+2' architecture effectively suppresses jitter, optimises channel separation and phase consistency, and delivers an exceptional signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range.
True to Your Ears
The ND-1 features a custom-built, ultra-low-phase-noise femtosecond clock that provides a high-precision reference signal for the D/A conversion circuit. It also incorporates a high-performance DPLL clock synthesis circuit derived from Matrix Audio's flagship MS-1, supporting an external clock reference mode. When paired with the Matrix Audio SC-1 Audio Grade Reference Clock, the system can realise its full performance potential, capturing the finest musical nuances and dynamic contrasts to deliver a transparent, composed and richly layered sound with vivid realism.
Two Selectable Output Levels
The ND-1 is equipped with XLR and RCA analogue outputs, with two selectable output levels. This allows the output voltage to be matched to the input sensitivity of amplifiers or active speakers, enabling precise gain staging while helping to prevent signal overload distortion or dynamic loss caused by an insufficient signal level.
100-Step Volume Attenuation
The ND-1 also features high-precision digital volume control with 100-step attenuation, allowing direct connection to a power amplifier or active speakers without the need for a separate preamplifier.
PCM Resampling and DSD Conversion
The ND-1's built-in asynchronous upsampling and DSD conversion engine processes audio data in the digital domain. Through asynchronous resampling and interpolation, it helps isolate jitter and improve detail retrieval. The DSD converter can transform all playback audio into DSD, enhancing the density of the sound. With adjustable PCM and DSD conversion settings, the processing engine allows listeners to explore the sonic differences between different configurations.
One DAC, Two Worlds
In a distinctive departure from conventional designs, the ND-1 uses precision LUNDAHL transformers for signal coupling in its output stage. A timbre-switching function allows listeners to choose between Transformer and Op-Amp sound characteristics.
In Transformer mode, the sound takes on the distinctive warmth and rich, analogue-like qualities of Lundahl audio transformers. Op-Amp mode offers a more modern sonic presentation characterised by speed and high resolution, with clearly defined lines, sharp transients and precise retrieval of detail.
Source of Purity
In keeping with Matrix Audio's circuit design philosophy, the digital and analogue sections are arranged on two separate PCBs in a layered configuration. The digital circuitry occupies the lower level, while the D/A conversion stage sits above, helping to minimise interference. Powered by a multi-winding toroidal transformer and multiple LDO regulators, the fully linear power supply provides stable, high-quality power to each circuit section.
Rock-Solid Stability
The ND-1 is equipped with the MA-DAMPER PRO isolation damper, jointly developed by Matrix Audio and Audio Bastion. Constructed from five materials, aluminium, stainless steel, rubber, isolation beads and composite cork, it forms a multi-layer damping and vibration-control system. This effectively absorbs and counteracts external mechanical interference. When paired with Matrix Audio's custom TEMPO DX RACK, the system works in precise synergy to create a comprehensive vibration-control solution.
Masterful Engineering
The Matrix Audio N Series is designed not only to be heard but also to be admired. Inheriting the design language of the Matrix Audio family, its meticulously crafted CNC-machined aluminium chassis brings tactile and visual refinement to every detail. The result is a restrained expression of craftsmanship and a profound tribute to the art of listening.
Versatile Combinations
The ND-1 integrates seamlessly with the Matrix Audio NT-1 Digital Audio Transport and NA-1 Headphone Amplifier to form a complete desktop Hi-Fi separates system, combining playback, digital-to-analogue conversion and amplification in one setup. It can also be paired with the SC-1 Audio Grade Reference Clock for a comprehensive upgrade, or combined with the SS-1 Pro to further enhance overall performance at the network transmission level. Flexible in configuration and highly versatile, the ND-1 allows audiophiles to build a personalised, high-performance audio system with ease.
