SS-1 Pro

A New Territory, A New Evolution
The SS-1 Pro is an audio-grade network switch designed by Matrix Audio specifically for Hi-Fi streaming systems. Unlike conventional network switches, it is engineered with the needs of high-quality audio systems in mind. Its power supply, clock system, cooling method and component selection have been carefully developed to support the reliable transmission of high-resolution streaming audio.

Higher Speed, Better Performance
Matrix Audio's development of higher-speed audio-grade network switches is rooted in digital circuit design. Systems designed to support higher-speed signal transmission can offer greater stability margins, potentially reducing timing errors compared with equipment designed for lower speeds. This approach allows high-speed devices operating at lower data rates to benefit from the design advantages of high-speed circuitry.

Dual Isolated 10 Gbps Ports
Two SFP/SFP+ ports support connection speeds of up to 10 Gbps and accept compatible optical fibre or RJ45 modules. These ports allow upstream network equipment and digital audio players to be connected, with fibre-optic connections providing electrical isolation between network devices and audio equipment. This helps prevent high-frequency noise and interference from travelling through ground connections into connected audio components.

Independent Ethernet Sockets
The SS-1 Pro features multiple Ethernet ports supporting speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps, alongside two 100 Mbps ports. Connecting compatible audio devices to the lower-speed ports reduces their network connection speed and may help minimise bit errors during data transmission. The ports use independent sockets with generous spacing to accommodate larger high-end cables. The switch also features 10 Gbps-rated independent Ethernet transformers and fully shielded Ethernet sockets. Each signal transformer is individually enclosed in a metal shield to improve resistance to radio-frequency interference.

External Clock Input and RF Synthesiser
The clock system is essential to the precise operation of digital circuits, and network switches are no exception. In the SS-1 Pro, it comprises a femtosecond clock and a high-precision RF synthesiser with ultra-low phase noise. Two clock modes are available. In internal clock mode, the femtosecond clock provides the reference for the RF synthesiser, which generates a highly stable, low-phase-noise clock signal for the main controller. In external clock mode, a 10 MHz signal from an external clock provides the reference for the RF synthesiser, while the DPLL generates a stable, low-phase-noise clock signal synchronised with the external reference for the main controller.

Configurable Indicator LEDs
The Ethernet port status LEDs can be switched off using the setting button on the rear panel. This allows the SS-1 Pro to operate without distracting indicator lights in dark or low-light listening environments.

Linear Power, Silent Cooling
The SS-1 Pro's first-stage power supply combines a custom O-core toroidal transformer with high-speed Schottky diodes and nearly 10,000 µF of audio-grade filtering capacitance. Up to six ultra-low-noise LDO linear regulators supply clean power to the clock system and main control chip. A large passive heatsink cools the main control chip without introducing fan noise.

Precision-Machined, Flexible Chassis Design
The precision-machined CNC aluminium chassis incorporates Matrix Audio's latest design language and features a reinforced steel base for added rigidity and stability. Four isolation feet are supplied as standard, with the option to switch to a three-foot arrangement to suit individual placement requirements and tuning preferences.
