Hybrid Amplification at its Most Ambitious

The McIntosh MC901 stands apart as a truly unconventional power amplifier, combining two entirely different amplification philosophies within a single monoblock chassis. Designed as the ultimate solution for bi-amping, it merges the musicality of vacuum tubes with the grip and authority of solid-state power. This unique configuration allows it to deliver a level of performance that would traditionally require multiple separate components, all within one cohesive design.

Two Amplifiers, One Unified Purpose

At its core, the MC901 is effectively two amplifiers working in tandem. A 300-watt vacuum tube amplifier is paired with a 600-watt solid-state amplifier, each dedicated to specific parts of the frequency range. The valve section handles midrange and high frequencies, while the solid-state section is tasked with driving the bass. This division ensures that each driver within a loudspeaker is powered in the most appropriate way, resulting in greater clarity, control and overall balance.

Hybrid Drive Technology

This dual-architecture approach is realised through McIntosh’s Hybrid Drive™ technology, which allows both amplification stages to operate in harmony. The vacuum tube section uses a Unity Coupled Circuit output transformer to deliver consistent power, while the solid-state stage employs Autoformer technology for stable output across different speaker impedances. Together, they create a synergistic relationship that maximises the strengths of both designs without compromise.

Purpose-Built for Bi-Amping Simplicity

Traditionally, bi-amping requires multiple amplifiers, external crossovers and careful system matching. The MC901 simplifies this process dramatically by integrating an adjustable internal crossover. This allows precise control over how frequencies are divided between the two amplification sections, with accessible adjustments that enable fine-tuning to suit both the loudspeakers and listener preferences.

Independent Power, Unified Performance

Each amplification stage within the MC901 operates with its own dedicated power supply, ensuring that neither section compromises the other’s performance. This separation allows both the valve and solid-state amplifiers to perform at their full potential, maintaining stability and authority even during demanding musical passages. The result is a presentation that feels controlled, expansive and effortlessly dynamic.

Advanced Protection and Signal Integrity

As with other McIntosh designs, the MC901 incorporates a range of proprietary technologies to protect both the amplifier and connected speakers. Power Guard and Power Guard Screen Grid Sensor monitor performance in real time, preventing distortion and safeguarding the vacuum tubes. Sentry Monitor provides additional protection against electrical faults, while a Quad Balanced design helps eliminate noise and preserve signal purity throughout the amplification process.

DualView Metering and Visual Identity

A defining feature of the MC901 is its DualView™ power output meter, which displays the performance of both amplification sections simultaneously. Two independent meters are stacked within a single display, offering real-time insight into output levels while reinforcing the amplifier’s dual nature. This visual element, combined with McIntosh’s signature blue illumination, adds a distinctive sense of theatre to its operation.

Statement Design with Engineering Depth

Physically, the MC901 reflects its status as a statement piece. From the exposed valves and precision-machined detailing to the glass top panel illustrating its internal layout, every element has been carefully considered. While its appearance may differ from more traditional designs, it retains unmistakable McIntosh cues, blending heritage styling with a bold, modern execution that mirrors its innovative engineering.
