What Is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio is music recorded and played back at higher quality than standard CD audio. A CD captures music at 16-bit/44.1kHz, which was revolutionary when we saw them come in the 1980s, but CD quality is now considered the baseline.

Hi-res files typically run at 24-bit/96kHz or higher, capturing more data, more dynamic range, and a smoother representation of the original recording. In theory, this brings you closer to what the artist and engineer heard in the studio.

But there’s a catch: you won’t hear the full benefit unless your playback equipment supports these higher rates. A dedicated DAC, amplifier, and a good set of speakers or headphones are essential.

FLAC: The Everyday Hi-Res Hero

If you’ve dipped a toe into hi-res audio, you’ve almost certainly encountered FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec).

FLAC compresses audio without losing any information — think of it as a hi-fi-friendly alternative to MP3. It delivers bit-perfect playback, supports metadata like album art, and keeps file sizes manageable. Better still, it’s open-source and almost universally supported.

It’s no wonder streaming services like Qobuz, Bandcamp and more recently Spotify state FLAC as their format of choice. If you’re starting out in hi-res audio, FLAC is the most practical and widely accessible option. In many ways, it has become the “everyday standard” of high-quality digital music.

DSD: The Audiophile’s Choice

At the other end of the spectrum lies DSD (Direct Stream Digital), originally developed for SACD (Super Audio CD). Unlike FLAC, which uses traditional PCM sampling, DSD works on a 1-bit system with extremely high sample rates (DSD64, DSD128, and beyond).

The result? Many audiophiles describe DSD as having a smooth, analogue-like quality. It’s a favourite for genres like classical and jazz, where detail and natural flow matter most.

But DSD has limitations:

  File sizes are enormous.

  Compatible software and hardware can be harder to find.

  Music availability is limited, often confined to specialist audiophile labels.

In short: if you’re chasing the last word in natural presentation and don’t mind the practical hurdles, DSD is worth exploring. For most listeners, however, it’s more niche.

Other Notables: WAV, AIFF, and MQA

While FLAC and DSD get most of the attention, a few other formats are worth mentioning:

  WAV and AIFF: Both are uncompressed formats that deliver bit-perfect sound. They’re great for archiving, but file sizes are very large, and they lack some of the convenience features (like easy tagging and metadata) of FLAC.

  ALAC (Apple Lossless): Apple’s alternative to FLAC, used in iTunes and Apple Music. It offers similar benefits but with Apple ecosystem lock-in.

  MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): Once touted as the future of hi-res, especially with Tidal, but it has become controversial. MQA promised hi-res sound in smaller files, but critics argue it’s unnecessary and proprietary. With Tidal having now moved away from MQA in favour of FLAC, its long-term relevance looks uncertain.

 

Beyond Formats: Why Your Gear Still Matters

Here’s the truth: a hi-res file on its own won’t transform your listening experience. To hear the difference, you need the right playback chain.

  A DAC that supports hi-res audio ensures those extra bits of data are decoded properly.

  A capable amplifier brings dynamics and control.

  Speakers or headphones with the right resolution reveal the finer details.

Even then, not everyone will hear dramatic differences, especially if you’re moving from CD quality (already excellent) to 24-bit/96kHz. Hi-res shines when paired with a well-balanced system. The Future of Hi-Res Audio

The good news for listeners is that hi-res is no longer confined to expensive downloads or niche players. Streaming services have caught up:

  Qobuz, Apple Music, and Amazon Music HD now offer hi-res as standard.

  Spotify, since September 2025 finally has "Lossless" streaming providing higher bit rate listening to it's paid users.

  Portable gear is evolving too, with smartphones offering higher-quality DACs and dedicated hi-res players becoming more affordable.

Looking ahead, expect to see more AI-powered upscaling and adaptive streaming — but whether these tools genuinely improve sound or just add more processing will remain up for debate.
