
TV technology names are getting harder to follow.
Mini-LED. Micro LED. RGB Mini-LED. Micro RGB.
They sound similar. They are not the same.
Recently, Hisense and Samsung both introduced RGB-based backlighting in premium TVs at CES 2026. The naming has caused confusion — especially around Samsung’s use of “Micro”.
Let’s clear it up.

What RGB Backlighting Means
Most LED TVs work like this:
• Blue or white LEDs sit behind the screen
• Colour filters turn that light into red, green and blue
RGB backlighting flips that idea.
Instead of filtering white light, the TV uses separate red, green and blue LEDs in the backlight itself.
That matters because:
• Colour is created directly
• Less light is wasted
• Colours can look brighter and more saturated
• Contrast improves, especially in darker scenes
This is still an LCD TV
There is still a backlight.
But it’s a much more advanced one.
Hisense RGB Mini-LED Explained
Hisense was first to bring RGB backlighting to a consumer TV.
You’ll see it described as RGB Mini-LED.
How It Works
• The TV uses Mini-LED backlighting
• Instead of white or blue LEDs, each backlight zone uses red, green and blue LEDs
• These LEDs are small, but still classed as Mini-LED in size
• The LCD panel sits in front, as with any LED TV
What You Gain
• Higher colour brightness
• Stronger colour saturation
• Better control over light in dark scenes
• Less reliance on heavy colour filtering
In simple terms: You get a more vivid image without just pushing brightness.
What It Isn’t
• It is not self-emissive
• It is not per-pixel lighting
• It is still an LCD TV with zones of backlight control
That’s important when comparing it to OLED or Micro LED.

Why RGB Backlighting Is Hard
RGB backlighting sounds simple. It isn’t.
There are two big challenges.
Hardware
• You need three times as many LEDs
• Red and green LEDs behave differently to blue ones
• Heat management is harder
• All three colours must age evenly
Any imbalance shows up on screen.
Processing
• The TV has to decide what colour the backlight should be in every zone
• That decision must work alongside the colour filter and image data
• The calculations happen thousands of times per second
This is why RGB backlighting has taken so long to reach the market.


Samsung Micro RGB Explained
Samsung’s approach is called Micro RGB.
This is where confusion starts.
What Micro RGB Actually Is
• A backlit LCD TV
• Uses extremely small RGB LEDs in the backlight
• These LEDs are under 100 microns in size
• Much smaller than typical Mini-LEDs
The “Micro” refers to LED size, not the display type.
What Makes It Different
• Far denser backlight arrays
• More precise local dimming
• Finer control over colour and brightness
• Advanced AI processing to manage it all
Samsung claims:
• Extremely wide colour coverage
• Very high colour accuracy
• Better contrast control than traditional Mini-LED
In practice, this is RGB backlighting taken to its most advanced form.
Samsung currently has the 2025 115” R95F available now and we’ll see the new R95H come to market later this year with a whopping 130” model coming.
Micro RGB vs Micro LED: Not the Same Thing
This is the key clarification.
Micro RGB is not Micro LED.
They are completely different technologies.
Micro RGB
• LCD panel
• RGB LED backlight
• Zones of light, not pixels
• Light passes through the screen
Micro LED
• Each pixel emits its own light
• No backlight
• No LCD panel
• Used in modular displays like Samsung “The Wall”
The naming overlap is unfortunate.
But the technologies are unrelated.
In fact, Hisense showcased a huge 163” genuine Micro LED TV at CES 2026 this year. It’s not something you can buy this year, it was just a demo of the technology and that it may well be coming down the wire.


Hisense RGB Mini-LED vs Samsung Micro RGB
Here’s the practical difference.
LED Size
• Hisense: Mini-LED scale
• Samsung: Micro-scale RGB LEDs
Backlight Density
• Hisense offers strong local dimming
• Samsung pushes this further with much higher density
Processing
• Both rely heavily on image processing
• Samsung places more emphasis on AI-driven optimisation
Display Type
• Both are LCD TVs
• Both use RGB backlighting
• Neither is emissive like OLED or Micro LED
Think of Micro RGB as a more extreme, more precise evolution of the same idea.
Who are these TVs for?
Both RGB Mini LED and Micro RGB TVs are premium TVs designed for people looking for the bleeding edge in huge TV tech.
We haven’t mentioned OLED here and for good reason - they are a different beast. OLED panels are more expensive to manufacture and there aren’t any OLEDs above 97”.
So, if you’re after home cinema style 100”+ sizes - OLED is not for you. If you have the budget and the need for a monster TV then look out for Hisense’s and Samsung’s new premium TV releases coming later this year.
The Big Takeaway
Ignore the names.
Focus on what’s happening behind the screen.
• Both TVs use RGB backlighting
• Both are still LCD TVs
• Samsung Micro RGB is not Micro LED
• Hisense RGB Mini-LED is not standard Mini-LED
This is LCD technology evolving — not being replaced.
And it’s getting very, very good.
